A Week Long Counseling and Career GuidanceNamgyal Higher Secondary School, Gokarna

(1st November to 8th November 2006)

It was on 1st November 2006 the School Director introduced Mr. Kelsang Tsewang, the Counselor to all the students and the teachers in the morning assembly. He also briefly explained about how important career and guidance is for the students of higher secondary school like us.
 
Mr. Kelsang Tsewang started taking his lessons from 1st November. He took the lessons with students of classes XII A, XII B, XI A, XI B, XI C, X A, X B, X C, IX A, IX B, IX C, IX D. He had two sessions a day ( morning and afternoon ). A session is divided into two periods. A period is of 1 hour and 10 minutes time. His teaching to the students through class lecture and CD show consist the following selected topics:

1. Self Analysis, Goal Setting, Career problems of students, Career Options, Emerging Careers, Developing Self confidence, Problem related to students.
2. Choosing Career, Career Options for Humanities, Commerce and Science, Professional Career and courses, Emerging career and Hot Jobs, Choosing colleges and courses, Scholarship and Financial Aid.
3. Ice Breaking games for removing shyness and developing public speaking.

  
Beyond the regular class hours in the evening after 4 p.m. the counselor was available there in the school so that individual students could meet him individually and talk on any problems. This face-to-face meeting and interaction with the counselor had really lessened the problems of some many individual students and this had helped them in   building their self-esteem. After all, this one-week Counseling and Career Guidance has truly benefited some 318 students who are presently studying in higher classes as mentioned above.
 
A talk to the teachers and staff members

On 8th November, the counselor gave a lecture and also showed CD to the teachers and other staff dealing with the following topics:

1. Educational counseling
2. Adolescent
3. Slow Learners
4. Learning Disabilities

Finally, the counselor emphasized on the importance of counseling skills to the teachers by saying that counseling has become a part and parcel of modern education. A teacher with counseling skills can understand his/her students better and can be a better and more helpful teacher.
