Preamble : It is an axiom that, ever since the dawn of civilisation, human survival is impossible without education and enculturation of the individuals, particularly the younger generations. And better the education and enculturation of the community, the better are its chances of progress and competence in the world. Naturally, we are no exception to this general rule.
It is for this reason only that, since the settling of Tibetan refugees in India, Nepal and Bhutan, the Department of Tibetan Education, Dharamshala has tried its best and utilized all its resources to open up Schools in all those remote places where Tibetan refugees have settled, integrate and co-ordinate their education, inspire the people, and ater to the needs of the community at large. However, the Schools opened over the years in various parts of Nepal were generally Primary or Middle Schools. As a result, most of the students, owing to their economic problems, couldn’t afford to go for their higher education, because, to study within the community-atmosphere, they had to go to India to complete even their Class Ten.
There was thus a pressing need for a Secondary School in Nepal. All realized this. And the initiative was taken by the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamshala, India. They purchased the land for the project, while it remained beyond their means to go any further. SOS Kinderdorf International was requested, therefore, to finance the forward march of the project. They graciously did so. They provided for the construction of the buildings as well as the necessary infrastructure. It was thus on the 2nd April 1988 that Namygal High School was born, not merely as an idea, but as a living institution for the education and enculturation of the Tibetan Children in Nepal.
Every baby is born delicate. It needs much care and protection. Difficulties faced are many… Namgyal High school was no exception to this law of nature. Hence, let us salute all those farsighted individuals who put in their best efforts to start this School! It goes without saying that during its early years, many Tibetans residing in the Kathmandu Valley contributed much for the Namgyal High School.
It was only five years later that the current Director, Mr. Wangdu Phuntsok, was bestowed the leadership of the School.

Facilities and enhancement of the same :
In 1995 A.D., the School upgraded from Namgyal High School to Namgyal Higher Secondary School and the Classes for Plus Two in the Humanities and Commerce Streams have been conducted ever since, with excellent results every year. It must be gratefully acknowledged here that Mr. Helmut Kutin, Honorable President of SOS Kinderdorf International, and Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamsala, share the credit for all the blessings that the upgradation has brought to the students, their parents as well as to the community at large.
Thanks again to Mr. Helmut Kutin, who graciously provided us the finance, today we have an additional Hostel for the Senior Boys, a well-finished new building for Staff Quarters, a new triple-storey building for Office, Computer-education, etc., besides the Boys Hostel, Girls Hostel and all the other arrangements and equipments necessary for the operation of a Residential Higher Secondary School.
It is because of all these efforts and good-will that we have at present 460 Students and 51 Staff members at the School.

The Purpose and goals : As already said, education and enculturation of the youngster is the only tool and means through which the humanity can survive and progress. We, Tibetans, being a part of the humanity, have our own aspirations as human beings, and as a community with distinct problems and conditions within which we and our children find themselves. Our emphasis is upon a broad-based-curriculum and extra-curricular activities that inculcate an awareness about social values, self-respect, respect of others, human responsibility, etc., while giving the full opportunity for individual growth, discipline-inculcation, ambition, mutual cooperation as well as competition, and so forth. Quality Education and its evolution is our true motto.
Organizational structure : The School falls under the Service Rules and Regulation of Snow Lion Foundation, which is by registration a charitable institute, situated at Jawalakhel.
There is also the School Management Committee whose main responsibilities are :
- To review the over-all management of the School form time to time.
- To make decisions in important / major financial matters.
- To approve Budgets / School Projects.
- To scrutinize the Accounts / Audit Report.
- The Committee meets 1 or 2 times a year or as and when the need be.
